| | bouncy | ] | Big storms this weekend.
The one that is currently trying to drown us has me wanting to go outside and drive around in the rain. I wish I had the mom's car so I could go play rally racer.
Instead, I'm gonna make some dinner and watch TV.

| Ahhh.....Lawn |
[May. 4th, 2007|07:05 pm] |
| [ | mood |
| | pleased | ] | So, I'm not exactly sure who decided (or when it was decided) that a well kept lawn means a that you're a good home owner...but after watching my dad spend summer after summer trying to keep the lawn in check, I'm ingrained.
After dealing with a couple busy weeks with finals and such, I finally got around to mowing. I even stopped at the store on the way home, and purchased some weed and feed fertilizer. Unfortunately, we had left the lawn in a 'natural' state, meaning that we had some patches that were upwards of a foot and half deep. I set the lawnmower to something between pillage and scorched earth and got to work. I managed to kill the mower 5 times; watching it choke its way dead on grass alone. I honestly thought I seized the mower when it wouldn't restart. I checked the manual, and realized that I had a really, really wrong spark plug in the engine. I had to run out, get a new spark plug. Crisis averted, I mowed the rest of the lawn, leaving massive clumps of grass and undoubtedly destroying vast amounts of chlorophyll in the process.
I then proceeded to lay down a quick pass of chemicals that should feed the grass and kill most of the weeds (we have a bit of a dandelion farm situation). It should rain tonight, sealing the deal.
Awesome. |

| Cats...sheesh |
[Apr. 28th, 2007|11:23 am] |
| [ | mood |
| | amused | ] | So the question of the day is...how did the freakin cat end up sleeping INSIDE my mattress?
That's right. I couldn't find the cat this morning, and I started freaking out. I didn't want to lose Jon's cat and I was afraid he was dead or had escaped to the great outdoors. I was looking everywhere for him, and he wasn't responding to my calls, which is weird, because with Jon gone, the cat is all sorts of friendly.
I checked under my bed, because the cat really likes it in there...mainly because he's not allowed in my room. He wasn't there, so I continued looking. I couldn't believe he was not under there. So I looked again about 5 minutes later and noticed a strange bulge hanging beneath my box-spring. Never having noticed it before, I poked at it, and it felt like a paw. I kept poking it and it started to meow. Damn kitty, he clawed his way through the soft, thin fabric that covers the bottom of the box spring, and crawled to the other end of the bed, and spent the night sleeping INSIDE my mattress.
What the hell kitty? I don't know if I should be impressed or if I should be pissed. I tried to get a picture or two, but he was 'out' before I could get Jon's camera and get back to my room. |

| Wow...already? |
[Apr. 23rd, 2007|09:00 pm] |
| [ | mood |
| | amused | ] | So, after a brief disussion with Laura, I realized that this is the second to last week of my first semester of Grad School.
It was, at times, easier than I thought it would be. It was, at other times, more effort than I'd put in across months of undergrad. That being said? Overall it was easier than I thought it would be...so far. I've been taking it kinda easy in lab, and really didn't get any results for my research. Thankfully, this summer will be only research, and I should be able to get a lot of crap done.
I'm working on my term paper presentation for Redox right now, and should get back to that?
Beth's wedding is soon, Jer and Tiff are coming back for a bit, and the smell of summer in the air has me itching for long warm nights whenever I'm outside. This promises to be a crazy-ass couple of months.
Sadly, I am again, in the mindset (shock?) that I need a different car. Perhaps nights long past, burning fuel, driving around, has me antsy for something less econocar. Maybe I'll find that bike I'm looking for... |

| [ | mood |
| | aggravated | ] | So I've run the same damn thing 3 times, and all three times it has failed. The best part, by far, is the fact that each time it fails in a new and creative way. First I had too much crap, second I had some weird bubbles, and today, I had nothing at all. Damn.
Oh well, this weekend promises to be fun, between Beth at home, Mexican with the H/J-dog(s), and sleeping, it should be a good time. |

| *&%# law school |
[Apr. 11th, 2007|10:58 am] |
| [ | mood |
| | amused | ] | So the kids at the law school (Jdog excluded, I'm sure) have a strange ability to nearly cause car accidents that involve me, once a week. I have to drive past the law school's parking lot exit on the way to and from work which puts me in extreme peril as the law kids seem to enjoy pulling out, across my lane (going 'left') forcing me to slam on the brakes, lest I t-bone them. I'm not sure if they are suicidal or convinced that their lawyering skills are so good that I would be convinced to take the blame.
hmmph.
I did see Grindhouse last night. Epic would be a good word for the films. As long as you don't expect something deep or meaningful...and you're a fan of gore, violence, and revel in excesses, you'd like the movies. The first one (Planet Terror) was much better as Mr. Q.T. wrote a film that only he could truly love...but both were pretty good. |

Vista disaster update:
Windows 'movie maker' boots up, and asks me to upload something. I drag in a video clip and my next click (no matter where) causes it to crash. Windows then pops up a note saying it is trying to 'fix' the problem, and then the fixer crashes.
Oh well. I guess I'll just borrow some of Jon's mac time.
I have a huge assed term paper due on the 5th as well as a presentation in the same class, on the same day.
Bastard school.
I did go check out an amazingly nice apartment complex with Laura today. Too bad I can't move out, lest Jon melt/die. Besides, I like it here. |

| ATi can eat me |
[Mar. 20th, 2007|11:25 pm] |
| [ | mood |
| | aggravated | ] | So a videogame won't work because my graphics card is 'generic' and doesn't have enough 'ram.' Both of these claims are false, so I email the game people. They suggest a driver update. I go to ATi's page, and try to find drivers for my card. Turns out they don't even have my card listed. So I email ATi. They tell me that they never support notebook cards and I should email Asus. I email Asus and they say that there are 'no known problems' and I should email the videogame people.
WTF? I have a new computer that evidently has some serious driver issues when it comes to my ATi x1700 and Vista. I emailed the guy who sold it to me, because I SPECIFICALLY said that I had read some stuff about ATi and Vista issues. I was trying to decide between an A8JP with nVidia graphics and my F3JP with ATi. He told me that I would NOT have any issues with this card. That's a lie. His current offer is to let me get a free copy (no disk) of XP until Vista and ATi get their shit together.
I don't know what to do. I'm thinking about dual booting XP and Vista so that if I want to USE my graphics card to any sort of extent, I can run XP. For those computer savvy, evidently Vista dropped openGL support and ATi doesn't have a fix yet (or ever?), but I don't fully understand what's going on. |

| Long time, no see |
[Jan. 11th, 2007|11:03 pm] |
| [ | mood |
| | tired | ] | So, never you fear, I am alive.
Grad school is fun, seeing as school is totally free, but it is already trying to kill me. After 6 months of 1 class and working a slightly more than part-time job, getting up regular hours and being places when I am required is new and taking some adjustment.
I also have a lot more things on my plate these days. One example: Since I have attended the required classes, I am now the lab's purchasing/supply officer. What's this mean? I get to spend anywhere from 1 to 4 hours on the phone most days buying things for everyone and trying to get a good price. I spent something like 800 dollars today (10 bucks added when they have to fill the box with ICE!!! ICE!!! ..as in Water ice, not dry ice, water ice) and all of it was pretty boring stuff. Maybe the University wouldnt notice if I bought a computer on the 'p-card.'
I've also, in the past week, taken a 3,000 dollar pay-cut and then received a 3,000 dollar raise. My boss sent me an official offer letter (grad studies wanted one) and it said 'you will be getting XXX and no benefits.' That was my 3,000 dollar pay cut. The next day I get one with the original (think 6 months ago from CBC program) number, so that was a little victory. I still am missing my benifits, but the program and my original offer says 'benefits paid' so I'll be fighting for those...
All and all, I'll be sleeping less, working more normal hours, and trying to keep my head above water in classes. I'm only taking 2, but they're both not what you'd call easy. One is basically a repeat/more indepth version of stuff I've taken before (that's the idea) but one is a full fledge grad class (redox biochemistry) full of new stuff. I have to stare at the Prof of my Redox class and listen very, very hard to understand what he's saying. Upsides? He does print off all the slides before lecture (only 10 people in class) and the textbook is a draft (read: on CD). Too bad I now have to print off an entire textbook, because I have a hard time reading off of a computer screen.
Okay, long update, but I'll try and keep you all a little more posted in the future. |

I decided (with some prodding from Laura) that I should probably look into classes for next semester.
This was the email I got back:
"You will probably take: BIOC 898 - Research in Biochemistry BIOC 992K - Seminar in Biochemistry (you will have to take 2 semesters of this class)
Also offered this spring will be:
BIOC 810 - Plant Molecular Bio. () BIOC 434/834 - Plant Biochemistry () BIOC 436/836 - Biophysical Chemistry () BIOC 848 - Redox Biochemistry () BIOC 932 - Proteins () "
